"Much is to be gained by eBooks: ease, convenience, portability. But something is definitely lost: tradition, a sensual experience, the comfort of thingy-ness — a little bit of humanity."

"It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops."

"According to Greek mythology, humans were originally created with four arms, four legs and a head with two faces. Fearing their power, Zeus split them into two separate beings, condemning them to spend their lives in search of their other halves."

you, sir, will be missed

The Captain will announce his retirement later in the week. So in the same month, the Red Sox have (predictably) lost Tim Wakefield and now Jason Varitek.
I know he had his faults (running at about the speed of molasses), but I am choosing to remember only the good, the “C” on his jersey and that it was there for five years for good reason. Tek’s ability to handle some big name pitchers, Curt Schilling and Josh Beckett come to mind, and call games is unparalleled. That he alone holds the record for most no-hitters caught is proof. I hope for the 2012 season, that Varitek’s work with pitchers and catchers that came up through the Red Sox system (Lester, Buchholz, Saltalamacchia, Shoppach…kind of) is lasting.

signs of spring

Signs of spring: It’s a cold and rainy Truck Day at Fenway, a handful of players are already in Fort Myers including Jon Lester and Daisuke Matsuzaka and I’m in the virtual waiting room waiting to buy Sox-Yankees tickets. One week until Pitchers and Catchers!

Those are some big Bean Boots.
I love LL Bean. In part because they do things like this.

Many Boston landmarks turn 100 this year
- A ballpark, hotel, and zoo were just a few of the new additions to Boston in 1912 that have long since become city landmarks.
Several buildings in the old ‘hood turning 100 this year: Fenway Park, the Fairmont Copley Plaza, the YMCA on Huntington and and Peter Bent Brigham Hospital (which is now part of Brigham and Women’s.) Happy Birthday!
